The following statement is from the Managing Director of the Australian Postal Corporation, Graeme John, in response to today’s Federal Government decision on postal deregulation:

“While the reforms go further than we proposed to the National Competition Council, they will not cause closures of post offices or mail centres in rural or regional Australia, and there will be no reduction in the standard of postal services.

“The standard letter rate will remain at 45c until 2003 - an unmatched 11 year price ‘freeze’ - and from October next year we will offer further bulk discounts averaging 8.7 per cent for barcoded mail.

“The reforms will stretch the corporation. -

“To counter the rapidly growing challenges from technological substitution, we have initiated continuous reform'over recent years.

“Now it is vital that reform continues if we are to maintain recognition as one of the world's best postal administrations."
