The Australian Government is providing assistance for flood victims in Bangladesh.

Over the past few weeks, continuous rainfall in Bangladesh and in the catchment areas of the Brahmaputra and Ganges Rivers has led to extensive flooding, with large areas of the country under water. The floods are reported to be the worst in recorded history.

Latest reports put the death toll at 850, and damage caused by the floods to both agriculture and infrastructure has been substantial. Outbreaks of water-bume diseases have also been reported.

In response to an appeal for international assistance by the Government of Bangladesh, Australia is providing food aid valued at $1 million.

In addition to this emergency assistance, Australia will bring forward planned food shipments to Bangladesh, this year comprising more than 80,000 tonnes of Australian wheat. v

Australia is also providing $100,000 for emergency relief activities. The funds will be provided to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research for emergency medical treatment and to local non-govemment organisations for other flood relief activities.
