No further Cuts Must Be the Prelude to Commence Planning to Increase Australia’s Investment in Higher Education

The Australian Vice-Chancellors’ Committee (AVCC) has welcomed the Government’s confirmation that there are to be no further cuts to university funding in the forward estimates, but has said that the Government must now look forward to addressing key areas where financial stress is beginning to threaten the quality of A u stria n higher education.

The President of the AVCC, Professor John Niland, said the Government would need to address looming financial problems posed for universities by the third round of enterprise bargaining and by impending reductions in research support funding.

“It is re-assuring that the Minister’s promise to maintain operating grants remains a core promise. Funding to support proper enterprise bargaining is now the main priority, and we expect that to be addressed in the lead up to the election.

“Another critical issue will be research support and while this is not addressed in the budget we note the Minister’s undertaking to make a statement on research and research training which we trust will include the necessary financial commitment.”
