APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRPERSON OF THE SEAFARERS SAFETY, REHABILITATION AND COMPENSATION AUTHORITY

The Minister for Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business, Peter Reith, today announced the appointment of Mr Geoffrey Gronow as the new Chairperson of the Seafarers Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Authority (the Seacare Authority).

The Seacare Authority's functions include monitoring the operation of the Seafarers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1992, promoting high operational standards of claims management and effective rehabilitation procedures by employers, and co-operating with other bodies or persons with the aim of reducing work injuries. ·

Mr Gronow is currently a partner of the legal firm of Middletons Moore and Bevins. From 1963 to 1985, he practised as a barrister/solicitor in the areas of workers’ compensation and industrial accidents and, more recently, in general litigation and commercial law.

Mr Gronow also served as the Chairman of the Law Institute of Victoria’s Accident Compensation Committee for a number of years until 1990.

The Minister also announced that he had appointed Ms Sheila Butler as Deputy Chairperson of the Seacare Authority. Ms Butler is the Assistant Secretary, Safety and Compensation Policy Branch, Department of Employment, Workplace Relations and Small Business.

Both appointments are for a period of two years.
