LABOUR FORCE - AUGUST 1999

The number of employed people increased by 26,400 in August to reach 8,818,800 in seasonally adjusted terms according to Labour Force data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics this morning.

The jobs gain in August was concentrated in full-time employment which rose by 25,800. Part-time employment rose by 600. There have now been 514,300 jobs created since the Coalition came to power in March 1996. Over the last twelve months employment has grown by 2.3 per cent. '

The participation rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 63.3 per cent, its highest level since October 1998 leading to an increase in the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate from 7.0 to 7.2 per cent.

In trend terms, the unemployment rate fell from 7.2 to 7.1 per cent, the lowest rate since July 1990. The number of people looking for work fell by 4,600.

The teenage labour market retained most of the gains made in recent months. While the teenage full time unemployment rate rose marginally from 21.4 per cent to 21.6 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms, the proportion of the teenage population looking for fUll-time work remained steady at 4.9 per cent. The trend teenage unemployment rate fell to 21.8 per cent,

the lowest rate since October 1990.

The labour force data for August consolidates the improvements seen over the last three months. While this reflects the Government’s effective management of the economy, more needs to be done. Achieving this outcome will require further labour market reform, including an exemption from unfair dismissal laws for small business.
