Media Release

The Federal Minister for Sport and Tourism and Minister assisting the Prime Minister for the Sydney 2000 Games, Jackie Kelly, has welcomed the appointment of Tim Fischer as Mayor of the Athletes’ Village for the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.

The Minister said she could not think of a better person for the job.

“This is an historic time in our Nation’s history and it is only fitting that a man with as much experience, warmth and bipartisan respect as Tim Fischer should be there to help ensure things run smoothly.”

Mr Fischer will have two Deputy Mayors - Paralympic gold medallist and marketing manager Peter Trotter and the Sydney business woman and former elite athlete, Sarina Bratton.

Jackie Kelly said Mr. Fischer’s lengthy experience in organisational and logistical challenges - together with his experience on the international stage - made him an outstanding asset to Australia’s Paralympic effort.

“Part of Australia’s job is to market ourselves honestly and fairly to the world. You won’t find anyone with more honesty and fairness than Tim Fischer.”

The Sports Minister said next year’s Paralympic Games would be the biggest and best ever and hold the Nation in good stead for decades to come.
