Federal Labor Investing in Kalamunda Infrastructure

Anthony Albanese,Chris Evans,Sharryn Jackson posted Wednesday, 11 August 2010

The Gillard Labor Government has pledged to partner with the Shire of Kalamunda to build a new link between Kalamunda Road and the proposed Elmore Way, High Wycombe.

The announcement was made today by Minister for Infrastructure and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Evans and Member for Hasluck, Sharryn Jackson.

Federal Labor will contribute $1.2 million towards the project, which will greatly improve traffic flow and access to the nearby High Wycombe Village Shopping Centre.

All up, this is a $3.4 million project with the Shire of Kalamunda covering the additional costs. The project will build the new access road and as well as associated pathways, drainage works and landscaping.

The additional funding from Federal Labor will complete the project by safely undergrounding powerlines which currently overhang the site.

“The Shire of Kalumunda has experienced growth in residential areas including High Wycombe over a number of years,” Chris Evans said.

“This project has been planned by the Council in order to support that growth into the future.

“Investing in local infrastructure that supports sustainable communities is part of Federal Labor’s plan to build stronger local economies.”

Sharryn Jackson said the project had been in the pipeline for some time, and she was pleased to secure the funding today.

“This project will be a great benefit to the businesses, families and residents of High Wycombe and the wider Kalamunda Shire area,” she said.

“The construction works will support jobs in the short term, and the improved access to the Shopping Centre will encourage economic activity into the future.”

Anthony Albanese said the funding would build on Federal Labor’s record investment in local infrastructure in the area, including more than $2.4 million for the Kalamunda Community and Cultural Centre and $544,000 for major upgrades to the Kalamunda Aquatic Centre.

Funding for this contribution will be fully offset over the forward estimates, consistent with the Gillard Labor Government’s commitment to return the budget to surplus in 2013, three years ahead of schedule.
