Brown in Kyoto for Climate Change Protocol Commencement

15th February 2005

Senator Calls on Backbench to Stand up to Howard to End International Embarrassment Australian Greens Senator Bob Brown will be present in Kyoto, Japan as the world celebrates the commencement of the Kyoto Protocol tomorrow, Wednesday 16 February 2005. "This is a great occasion for the planet but a terrible moment for Australia. Everyone here in Japan knows that the Australian government is an environmental ‘bad boy’," Senator Brown said from Kyoto. "They also know of the senseless destruction of Tasmania’s forests and the adverse impact the logging and burning is having on Australia’s

greenhouse gas emissions. "The ratification of the Kyoto protocol is a critical step forward as the world begins to come to grips with the awesome economic and environmental challenges of climate change. "So much more needs to be done beyond the Kyoto Protocol but Australia will no even take this small step. "John Howard’s siding with the Bush administration in refusing to ratify the protocol is an international embarrassment. "I will be explaining to international delegates in Kyoto that the Australian Government’s refusal to ratify the protocol does not reflect the overwhelming public support for the protocol with polls showing more than 80% support for ratification. "It is time for Howard Government backbenchers to stand up to the Prime Minister and demand what is right for Australia and the planet: the immediate ratification of the Kyoto Protocol.
