ROGER PRICE MP Chief Government Whip Federal Member for Chifley 4th March, 2009

Mission Australia NEIS Graduation

Federal Member for Chifley, Roger Price has today presented Graduation Certificates to 24 graduates of the Australian Government funded New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) which gives unemployed people the opportunity to begin and maintain their business.

“It’s great to see so many optimistic graduates about to take on the business world. Key to their success will be to stay positive especially during the global financial crisis” Mr. Price said.

One graduate who is already making a name for herself is Alicia Martin whose food hamper business has seen her nominated for “Blacktown Small Business Woman of the Year”.

NEIS is funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and is one of Australia’s longest running and most successful employment programmes having started in 1985 under the Hawke Labor Government.

This years graduates have impressively diverse backgrounds ranging from a graphic designer, a farrier, an electrician, restaurateurs and more, and all are excited to put their new found skills to the test.

The Scheme is designed to assist eligible, unemployed people set up and run their own business. Participants undertake Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management) which provides them with training and skills in small business management, and also assistance in developing a business plan which assists when approaching banks or credit unions for finance.

If the plan is approved by an external panel of business people and DEEWR, participants are then eligible to a year of NEIS payments - paid fortnightly, totalling approximately $10,000 and paid independently of business income. Each participant is also assigned a Business Mentor to provide guidance for the first 12 months of their business operation.

“I commend all the successful graduates and wish them every success with their new enterprises” Mr. Price concluded.
