Media Release DavidHawkerMP Federal Member for Wannon

21 January 2004

Member for Wannon - David Hawker - has hit back at critical comments concerning the Telstra Call Centre in Hamilton.

He described the loss of 19 full-time and 9 part-time jobs as “never welcome” and said Telstra deserved criticism for not doing more.

“However, Telstra freely admits that my lobbying delayed the decision for several years,” Mr. Hawker said.

“I have now written to Communications Minister - Daryl Williams - highlighting my anger and pressuring him to push Telstra to locate others parts of its business locally.

“Significantly, a quick survey of local business shows growth in local jobs through the appointment of over 140 businesses in the south west to sell and service Telstra products.

“Outlets in Hamilton alone have put on 16 extra staff in the last three years. Across the south west, the number exceeds 50.”

Mr. Hawker said he would continue to work for the growth of job opportunities in the region as communications systems expanded.
