MEDIA RELEASE

ABBOTT STILL REFUSING TO COMMIT TO 12 SUBMARINES - IN ADELAIDE OR ANYWHERE

28 August 2012

Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today said “Tony Abbott has again failed to commit to assembling 12 submarines in Adelaide. In fact he hasn’t committed to 12 submarines at all.”

“Tony Abbott needs to come clean once and for all and answer these questions:

1. Is he committed to 12 submarines? 2. Is he committed to assembling them in Adelaide?”

“Until he answers these questions thousands of jobs in South Australia are at risk if the Liberal Party wins the next election.”

In May Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey also made it clear that he’d prefer to see the submarines built overseas:

“We want to see what the benefit is in actually building these submarines here in Australia rather than getting cheaper versions from overseas.”

The Government has committed to assembling the 12 Future Submarines in Adelaide.

The 12 Future Submarines are the biggest Defence project Australia has ever undertaken. It will be the largest military procurement project in our nation's history.

It means work for hundreds of Australian companies and thousands of Australian workers, including boiler makers, welders, electricians, naval architects, engineers and many more.
