Border Protection Command intercepts vessel

HMAS Melville, operating under the coordination of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC), rendered assistance to a suspected irregular entry vessel north-west of Christmas Island this morning.

Initial indications suggest there were 165 people on board.

The vessel was initially detected by a RAAF P3 maritime surveillance aircraft, operating under the control of Border Protection Command.

Border Protection Command will now make arrangements for the people from this vessel to be transferred to Australian Government authorities at Christmas Island. At Christmas Island, they will undergo initial security, health and identity checks and their reasons for travel will be established.

People arriving by boat without a visa after 13 August 2012 run the risk of transfer to a regional processing country.
