Border Protection Command intercepts vessels

Border Protection Command intercepted two suspected irregular entry vessels yesterday afternoon.

ACV Hervey Bay, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted a suspected irregular entry vessel north of Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Initial indications suggest there were 49 people on board.

ACV Hervey Bay, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted a separate suspected irregular entry vessel north of Cocos (Keeling) Islands later yesterday.

Initial indications suggest there were 54 people on board.

Border Protection Command made arrangements for the people from these vessels to be transferred to Australian Government authorities at Christmas Island. At Christmas Island, they will undergo initial security, health and identity checks and their reasons for travel will be established.

People arriving by boat without a visa after 13 August 2012 run the risk of transfer to a regional processing country.
