MEDIA RELEASE

RETIREMENT OF MR MICHAEL CARMODY AO

24 August 2012

The Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Justice and Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare today paid tribute to Mr Michael Carmody AO, a 44 year giant of the Commonwealth Public Service, who announced his retirement today.

In the short time I have had the privilege to work with Michael I have observed all of the qualities of candour, professionalism and integrity for which he is so well known.

Michael has decided to draw the curtain on a stellar public service career. He commenced at the Australian Taxation Office in 1968 and was appointed Commissioner of Taxation in 1993, a position he held for 13 years.

As the Commissioner of Taxation he combined the steadiest of leadership with a genuine flare for developing and implementing reform. He oversaw the introduction of the GST, a modernisation of the tax system and improved engagement with the community.

In 2005 Michael was awarded the Order of Australia in recognition of his contribution to public service tax administration.

In January 2006 Michael was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Customs Service and has driven the change in transitioning Customs to the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service. He also served as a member of the Board of the Australian Crime Commission.

Michael Carmody’s intellect, capacity and decency will be sorely missed by all in the Commonwealth Public Sector.

I wish Michael a wonderful retirement.
