Minister Assisting for Deregulation

Media Release

Last night we saw how much of a danger Tony Abbott is to the national economy.

Mr Abbott tried to use BHP’s statement in relation to Olympic Dam as an opportunity to continue to prosecute his reckless and irresponsible scare campaign.

But on ABC’s 730 program last night, Mr Abbott admitted very clearly that he hadn’t read BHP’s statement. Today he was in damage control, desperately trying to backflip on his admissions just last night.

Mr Abbott was caught out lying on 730 last night with claims that clearly imply BHP has misled investors and misled the market by not providing a full and frank disclosure of the reasons surrounding their Olympic Dam decision.

The Olympic Dam is a $30 billion project and Mr Abbott couldn’t bring himself to read a one-page, 700-word statement.

If he had read it, he would know that BHP’s decision was due to “current market conditions including subdued commodity prices and higher capital costs” (BHP Statement, 22 August).

What we have here is a Leader of the Opposition who will allow no fact, no law, no person or company’s reputation to ever get in the way of his reckless and irresponsible scare campaign.

This sort of reckless negativity is a danger to the national economy.
