Employer militancy wrecking Qantas: Bandt

Greens Deputy Leader and industry and employment spokesperson Adam Bandt says Qantas management’s extreme industrial stance is wrecking the airline.

Mr Bandt says last year’s grounding of the Qantas fleet by CEO Allan Joyce had hurt the airline and reinforced the importance of limiting employers taking this kind of action for tactical legal reasons.

“It is no coincidence that Qantas has just posted the worst result in 17 years after it grounded its fleet last year,” Mr Bandt said.

“Qantas grounded its fleet as a legal tactic to bypass bargaining about job security and go straight to arbitration, where it was given a blank cheque to contract out its workforce.”

“This record loss reinforces the need to stop employers taking extreme action as a legal tactic to avoid bargaining with their workforce.”

“With its extreme industrial tactics, Qantas management is wrecking this airline.”

“Qantas is our national carrier and an important part of our economy and national security. Qantas needs to change direction. Qantas employees and shareholders deserve better. The nation deserves better.”

Mr Bandt’s Fair Work (Job Security and Fairer Bargaining) Amendment Bill will help stop employers, such as Qantas, from using lockouts as a legal tactic to bypass enterprise bargaining and go directly to arbitration.
