Nola Marino MP talks Cyber-Safety in Murray Schools

This Friday Federal Member for Murray, Sharman Stone will host Western Australian MP Nola Marino, who will present Cyber Bullying sessions in local schools.

Mrs. Marino is a member of the Federal Parliamentary Committee for Cyber-Safety.

Mrs. Marino has been conducting cyber safety presentations for a number of years in her home state of Western Australia.

“Nola will be speaking to Years 7, 8 and 9 this time around” Sharman Stone said. “We start the day at the Kyabram P-12, then we visit two Shepparton Colleges, McGuire and Notre Dame.

“Cyber bullying continues to be a major problem for many people, including adults. We addressed such an issue just recently where a local man and his girlfriend were targeted in a campaign of hatred and harassment on facebook.

“In the school yard it is particularly tough, resulting in some young people being driven to suicide. Social networking has been ramped up with users now using their mobile phones to post comments on their facebook pages or twitter.

“Young people need to know how to protect their privacy, their dignity and their personal details. Too many get carried away with filling their page with all sorts of information and photos .They do not seem to know where to draw the line, or the ramifactions of their postings.

“Going into chat rooms also presents dangers that need to be highlighted. These kind of environments give predators access to young people that they couldn’t get in the past.

“Social media used properly can be fun. It is also a popular way for people to keep in touch” Dr Stone said. “Putting in some boundaries and strategies to stay cyber safe will make it all the more enjoyable.”
