COALITION FLIP-FLOPS CREATE MORE UNCERTAINTY FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA

22 August 2012

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has claimed today that the Opposition has always been committed to building the Defence Force’s 12 Future Submarines in Australia:

“We’ve always said that we would prefer the submarines to be built at home. And if they’re going to be built at home, we would want that to happen in South Australia.”

This is not true.

In May this year the Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey said:

“We want to see what the benefit is in actually building these submarines here in Australia rather than getting cheaper versions from overseas.”

Yesterday in Parliament the Shadow Treasurer questioned whether they could be afforded at all.

The Federal Government is committed to building 12 Future Submarines which will be assembled in Adelaide.

This is the biggest Defence project Australia has ever undertaken.

It means work for hundreds of Australian companies and thousands of Australian workers, including boiler makers, welders, electricians, naval architects, engineers and many more.

If Tony Abbott wins the next election who knows what will happen to those jobs.

“Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey can’t even agree on whether they can afford these submarines or where they might want them to be assembled,” Mr Clare said.
