Government Commits to Increased Independent School Funding

The Independent Schools Council of Australia (ISCA) has today welcomed the commitment of the Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard, MP that "every independent school in Australia will see their funding increase under the Government's plan for school funding reform."

The Prime Minister gave this commitment as part of her opening address to the Independent Schools National Education Forum in Canberra today.

ISCA Executive Director, Mr Bill Daniels, said that it was pleasing that the Prime Minister is committed to ending the public-private debate and instead focus on lifting school standards, not school fees.

"This is the first time the Australian Government has made a commitment that goes beyond the no school will lose a dollar promise following the Gonski review", he said.

Mr Daniels said that the Prime Minister highlighted that the recent media reports on modelling was not the final modelling currently being used by the Government, "we look forward to seeing details of the modelling in the Government's response to the Gonski report".

"It is pleasing that the Prime Minister has committed the Australian Government to supporting the education of every Australian child, at the poorest and most remote school to the best known and best resourced school."

"This universal commitment comes from the idea, as expressed by the Prime Minister, that support for a child's education is one of the entitlements of citizenship," Mr Daniels said.

"There is a lot more work to be done and we are looking forward to working with the Government to finalise the funding model," Mr Daniels said.
