YANDINA STUDY TO COMMENCE WITHIN TWO WEEKS

Federal Land Transport Minister Bob Brown said today he expected the independent consultant's study of alternative routes for the National Highway at Yandina would commence within two weeks.

Mr Brown said that the final selection of the consultant to undertake the study would take place on 22 March.

"I would expect the successful consultant would commence work on the investigation immediately", Mr Brown said.

"It is quite wrong to infer, as some people have, that the $100,000 grant I announced last week to fund the study is just an election ploy.

"Kerry Orton, ALP Candidate for Fairfax, has every justification to demand an apology from those who have accused her of perpetrating a political stunt on this issue.

"Those who claim the study is an election gimmick are obviously rather less informed than the majority of Yandina residents, who are fully aware that the study was announced nearly three months ago", Mr Brown said.

"David Hamill and I announced the independent investigation before Christmas and the allocation of Federal funds to finance the study is an essential part of the proceess.

"Kerry has over many months conveyed to me the residents' wishes that there be

an independent resolution of this issue and can quite rightly take some of the credit for the decision to proceed in this direction", Mr Brown said.
