STATEMENT

LOSS OF THE "SEDCO HELEN"

(Statement by Hon. Ian Sinclair, M.P., Minister

for Shipping and Transport and Minister

Assisting the Minister for Trade and Industry)

The Minister for Shipping and Transport, Mr. Ian Sinclair, announced this evening that unfortunately

no further survivors from the "Sedco Helen" have been found,

This was despite a thorough search by sea and air of the area in which the vessel sank.

Wreckage, apparently from the deck of the "Sedco Helen", was located 14 miles.south east from the position where the oil rig supply vessel sank. It was now feared that the missing men had been carried down with the vessel.

Mr. Sinclair said that the crew of the

"Sedcn Helen" was 9 men but a further 11 men were on board at the time of the sinking because the operation of anchoring the Sedco oil rig had just been completed.

Captain R. Elliott, Regional Controller from the Perth office of the Department of Shipping and Transport,

is now proceeding to the scene and will immediately undertake

a preliminary enquiry into the incident.

14r. Sinclair expressed the regret of the Commonwealth Government at this unfortunate sinking and e'ctended sympathy to the relatives of the missing men.

The search will be continued overnight with

surf. ,ce vessels and aircraft will again be engaged from

first light tomorrow. Diving operations may also be

poss,ble tomorrow.
