MENT

AUSTRALIAN AGRICULTURAL COUNCIL AUSTRALIAN WOOL COMMISSION:

The. Australian Agricultural Council in Canberra. today

expressed unanimous support in. principle for the proposed

Australian Wool Commission.

The Council urged that legislation to establish the

Commission be introduced at the earliest possible.moment.

The chairman of the Council, Mr. Anthony, said he had

asked the States to agree to enact legislation which would enable the Commission to set terms and conditions governing

the sale of wool at auction after consultation with appropriate industry bodies and, if ultimately required, to control, where

necessary, the practice of the private buying and selling of

wool outside the auction system.

He said the Commonwealth Government would prepare draft legislation on these two matters for consideration by the State

Governments, and the State Ministers.had agreed to this course.

Mr. Anthony said that several State Ministers had expressed

the view that the Commission should not have the power to direct the allocation of wool for auction as between the various wool-selling centres, without the consent of the State Government

concerned.

In particular, Mr. Crawford (N.S.W.) and Mr. Chandler

(Victoria) had asked that the matter be examined with a view to

safeguarding the desire of the States to maintain regional

wool-selling centres.

Mr. Anthony said the proposed power of the Commission to

control wool auction sale rosters and offerings, related to sales

within particular selling centres.

However, to meet the wishes of the States in relation to direction of wool to particular centres, a safeguard would

be written into the legislation.

The safeguard would provide that there should be no

significant redirection of wool from one centre to another unless such re-direction as first approved by the State Government concerned.
