TONY WINDSOR B.Ec MP INDEPENDENT FEDERAL MEMBER FOR NEW ENGLAND

PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

MEDIA RELEASE 29th March 2012 More NBN fibre to be rolled out in New England The announcement that Tamworth has been chosen to be connected to high-speed fibre broadband under the three year rollout plan of the National Broadband Network (NBN) has been welcomed by the Independent Member for New England, Tony Windsor. Under the three year rollout plan that was released today by the Prime Minister, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, and the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, the Hon. Senator Stephen Conroy, construction of the fibre network to more than 3.5 million premises across Australia will begin progressively between 1st April 2012 and 30th June 2015. Mr Windsor says the three year rollout plan includes 19,500 homes and businesses in East Tamworth, Hillvue, Oxley Vale, South Tamworth, Taminda, Tamworth and West Tamworth. “The NBN rollout is ramping up and is about to go into high gear,” said Mr Windsor. “Within three years, 19,500 homes and businesses in Tamworth will be on the way to having access to fast, reliable broadband through the NBN’s fibre network. “With speeds of up to one gigabit per second, locals who choose to connect to the NBN will discover a whole new world of opportunities at their fingertips.” The NBN will connect 93 per cent of homes and businesses around Australia to high-speed fibre broadband, with the remaining seven per cent in less built-up areas receiving high-speed fixed-wireless or next-generation satellite technologies. The fibre network has already been connected to 4,900 homes and businesses in Armidale, with construction currently underway to a further 9,600 premises. The fixed wireless network is also currently being rolled out in the areas surrounding Tamworth, where residents will receive a reliable service of up to 12 megabits per second. An interim satellite service is currently available to people in rural areas, with 110 premises already connected in the New England. Accelerating the rollout of the NBN in country areas and making sure the service is affordable for country people were two of the conditions in the terms of the agreement Mr Windsor struck with the Prime Minister after the last election. “I was determined that the NBN should be rolled out in country areas first, as I believe country people have the most to gain from high-speed broadband,” Mr Windsor said. “Country people will also benefit from a cross-subsidy, so the wholesale price for NBN services will be the same no matter whether you’re in the heart of a city or the middle of the bush. “This cross-subsidy is the same concept as the postage stamp - it might be more expensive for Australia Post to handle mail in the outback, but a stamp is the same price no matter where you live.” Mr Windsor says the NBN is about more than just faster broadband. “The NBN will support businesses in New England and around Australia to connect to new markets and find new, better ways of doing things to make their businesses more productive and more profitable.

“It’s about families in the New England getting online to access health and aged care services, it’s about people who need government services being able to access those online, and it’s about our kids getting access to world class education services, for example by being able to take a class at another school via the NBN.

“By overcoming the tyranny of distance, the NBN has the potential to radically improve the quality of life on offer in country areas,” Mr Windsor concluded.
