Gillard Government celebrates the Australian Year of the Farmer

The Australian Year of the Farmer has received a boost with the Government announcing $500,000 in additional funding.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, made the announcement from the Sydney Showground today alongside representatives from the Australian Year of the Farmer and Royal Agricultural Society of NSW.

“The Australian Year of the Farmer is an opportunity to celebrate the contribution that producers make to our food and fibre production, to our economy, to our communities and to our nation,” Minister Ludwig said.

“The Gillard Government is a proud supporter of the Australian Year of the Farmer and the work it is doing to raise awareness of our Australian farming community.

“The Australian Year of the Farmer is now well underway with events, activities and the roadshow now being rolled out across our nation.

“These events will help create and strengthen conditions between city and country.”

Minister Ludwig said the Government had previously provided seed funding of nearly $160,000 to help establish the Australian Year of the Farmer. This additional $500,000 in funding announced today will be used by Australian Year of the Farmer Ltd to support the roadshow, events and other educational activities.

“I’m particularly pleased that the Australian Year of the Farmer is educating people about where their food and fibre comes from,” he said.

“It was appropriate to make the announcement for additional funding against the backdrop of preparation for one of Australia’s premier agricultural events, the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

“It’s events like this that bring together our farmers and our suburban population, showcasing prize-winning produce and educating people about our world-class production.

“Nearly a million people will pass through the Sydney Show gates this year and Australian Year of the Farmer roadshow staff will be on hand with exhibitors and show organisers to spread the message that Australian farmers are among the best in the world.”
