CHAIR OF HORTICULTURE AT SYDN `Y UNIVERSITY

The establishment of the first Chairl of Horticulture

in Australia will be assisted by a Commonwealth Extension

Services Grant contribution of ;50,000 to the University of

Sydney.

The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr. Anthony,

announced this to-day. He said that the Appeals Committee

had informed him that its fund had now reached the level where

the University would proceed to work out means of bringing

the Chair into existence in the near future,.

The Committee had recently received a substantial

donation from the Government of New South Wales and had

obtained wide support from industry organisations, commercial

institutions and individuals throughout Australia. It was

renewing its efforts and expected to achieve its target

shortly.

Mr. Anthony said that, in spite of the diversity

and importance of Australia's horticultural industries, no

Chair of Horticulture had previously been established in this

country.

There had been a long-standing need to develop a

full-scale university course at the undergraduate level and

to provide postgraduate training facilities.

"I have no doubt that the existence of the Chair

will provide a real stimulus to students interested in

horticulture and lead to long-term benefits to research,

extension and commercial services to the horticultural

industries," Mr. Anthony added.
