CHAIRMANSHIP OF AUSTRALIAN CANNED FRUITS BOARD

The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr. Anthony, said

today that he had offered to make available Mr. M.W. Oakley, O.B.E., to act as Chairman of the Australian Canned Fruits

Board.

Mr. Anthony said the term of office of the former

chairman, Mr. L. Adams, bad expired last month, and the Board

had been giving consideration to the question of the chairman-ship of the Board for the''next three--year term.

Before finalising its decision, the Board has agreed to set up a committee to consider whether its chairman should

be appointed on a full—time or part—time basis, and to make

recommendations regarding the respective responsibilities of the Board's chairman and management.

"In the interim, I have agreed to a suggestion by

Board members that the deputy chairman, Mr. Oakley, who is

an officer of my department, should be made available to act as chairman subject to Board's agreement," Mr. Anthony said.

Mr. Anthony said he wanted to pay a tribute to the work done by Asir. Adams for the canned fruits industry during his six years as chairman of the Board.
