The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr. Anthony, announced

today that he had declared a further drought area in south-western

Queensland, and partially revoked an earlier declaration of areas in

Queensland and the Northern Territory in connection with the Drought

Bonds Scheme.

Notices of the declaration and revocations appeared in the

Commonwealth Gazette on 5 March, 1970.

Mr. Anthony said that the revocations covered 22 shires on

the central coast and south-eastern regions of Queensland and an area

to the south-west of CGirns, in addition to an area on the Barkly

Tableland in the Northern Territory.

A further 30 shires comprising a large part of the Queensland

pastoral districts remain a declared drought area for the purpose of

redeeming Drought Bonds.

He said: " p rimary producers who derive at least 90% of their

gross farm income from grazing sheep or beef cattle may claim an income

tax deduction for subscriptions to Drought Bonds.

"Bond-holders may redeem Bonds when the area in which their

property is situated is declared a drought area for this purpose by the

-2-

Minister for Primary Industry. Bonds may also be redeemed for a

period of 12 months after a drought declaration is revoked.

"The proceeds from redemption of Drought Bonds will be

included in the tax-payer's assessable income in the year in which

the Bonds become redeemable."
