ALP confirms support for occasional childcare

The Federal Coalition today expressed delight with an about-face from the Federal Government to restore funding for Australia’s occasional childcare services.

Yesterday Labor joined with the Coalition, Greens and Independents to support a motion calling for the reinstatement of $12m in Commonwealth support for occasional care.

Coalition Childcare spokesperson, Sussan Ley, says “I thank the Childcare Minister Kate Ellis for a change of heart on this, and look forward to a funding announcement as early as she can manage”.

“For Victoria, this is particularly marvellous news with up to 9000 families and 200 occasional care centres due to lose any form of government support for this service in just over a month.”

“It’s also people power at work, with a petition and lobbying from families across the nation convincing the cross benchers and now the ALP the decision to drop funding was wrong”, Ms Ley concluded.

The Opposition hopes this vital $12m package, removed from the 2010 and 2011 Federal budgets, can be restored as early as the Government’s approaching Mid Year Economic (MYEFO) review.
