Gillard Government delivers for Great Barrier Reef

Minister for Agriculture, Senator Joe Ludwig and Minister for Environment, Tony Burke, have today announced further funding to develop eReefs, which will enable better management of the reef.

With co-funding from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country - Reef Rescue program, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation will develop eReefs, a tool to evaluate and improve water quality outcomes through improved monitoring, modelling and visualisation programs.

Minister Ludwig said eReefs will enhance communication about how the reef will respond to threats like climate change.

“The reef is complex and is affected by changes in weather patterns, land use practices, water use and communities,” Minister Ludwig said.

“eReefs will provide a greater understanding of the delicate ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef.”

Minister Burke said the aim of eReefs was to integrate and communicate what is known about the reef and the impacts on it.

“The Great Barrier Reef is one of our most precious ecosystems and the Gillard Government is absolutely committed to protecting and conserving it for future generations,” Minister Burke said.

“eReefs will ensure that information is as accurate and up-to-date as possible and made available in a form that can be understood by all.”

Once developed, eReefs has the potential to become a visualisation and planning tool that will be essential to the design of future marine and catchment focused management programs and policies.

Furthermore, eReefs may assist with broader government and industry reporting requirements, including State of the Environment reporting, Great Barrier Reef Outlook reports and Reef Plan report cards.

The Government has committed $700,000 from the Caring for our Country program, the Australian Government’s $2 billion program aimed at achieving a real and measurable difference to Australia’s environment.

Caring for our Country funds projects across Australia to achieve national targets - projects that improve biodiversity and sustainable farm practices.
