Telstra targets Tasmania

Senator Brown, 21st February 2006

Telstra's plan to remove a total of 156 pay phones from Hobart and Launceston, revealed in today's Financial Review, are the inevitable result of privatisation, Greens leader Bob Brown said today.

"The Greens call on Tasmanian Liberal Senators and Members of the House of Representatives to block Telstra's plans and insist that Minister Coonan vetoes the service cuts.

"If these cuts go ahead, Tasmanians - like the rest of Australia - will lose an important service in the pursuit of profits.

"We call on Telstra to provide the public with a detailed list of where pay phones are to be removed and any evidence showing these pay phones aren't needed by the communities they are to be removed from," Senator Brown said.

Senator Brown also criticised the misleading stickers placed on phones marked for removal, which tell customers the service has been relocated.

"It would be closer to the truth if the stickers said 'this service has been relocated to benefit the big end of town'," Senator Brown said.
