Senator the Hon Eric Abetz

Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate

Shadow Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research

The Coalition today stood up for Australia’s car industry by supporting the passage of the Automotive

Transformation Scheme Bill 2009 unamended, Shadow Industry Minister, Senator Eric Abetz said today.

“It is disappointing that the Labor Government refused our amendments which would have required full disclosure

and transparency of the grants paid out under this scheme”, Senator Abetz said.

“It makes a mockery of Labor’s claims to support full transparency and accountability in Government.

“We believe it is not only in the taxpayers’ interests, but also the interests of the Australian automotive industry,

that the veil of secrecy surrounding Government support to this sector be lifted.

“While the Government did amend the Bill to require some limited reporting due to our advocacy, the

Government’s decision to keep the detail of payments under this scheme secret is a loss for the automotive

“I further note that the Minister had indicated that the Labor Government will defy the Continuing Order of the

Senate number 14 which requires that grants paid under this scheme be fully detailed to the Senate.

“I trust this decision will be reconsidered in the cold hard light of day.”
