Modbury Hospital's Contract And Operation To Be Reviewed Jenny Macklin - Shadow Minister for Health

Media Statement - 23 October 2000

Shadow Minister for Health Jenny Macklin today announced that a Federal Labor Government would establish an independent inquiry to investigate the contracts and operation of privatised public hospitals including the Modbury Hospital in Adelaide.

"Labor wants to make sure Medicare is there when you need it. This includes making sure the people in Adelaide's north eastern suburbs can get the public hospital care they need," Ms Macklin said.

Ms Macklin said the independent study would investigate whether privatised hospitals can meet Medicare's requirements for access and delivery of health care for all.

"The people in the north east of Adelaide have had concerns that since their hospital was privatised by the Liberal State Government in 1995 delivery and access to health services haven't met Medicare's high standards.

"It's time the concerns of the community were taken seriously and the hospital's contract and operation were opened up," Ms Macklin said.

Ms Macklin announced the inquiry during her visit to Modbury with Labor's Federal candidate for Makin, Julie Woodman. Authorised by Geoff Walsh, 19 National Circuit, Barton ACT 2600.
