FORE'NORD .

This compilation is in a sense a by-product of a book, "The Australian Federal Labour Party 1901- 1 951 " by

L,F, Crisp, to be published shortly by Messrs. Longmans, Green in London and Melbourne. In preparing biographical footnotes and statistical tables contained in that book we accumulated much of the material now presented. The re-

quirements of that book did not include a complete set of thumbnail biographies of ever Labour Member of the Common-wealth Parliament. It seemed a pity, however, having covered so many Members, that we should not complete the

list for the convenience of research workers and others interested in Labour history. .tccordinply we have sought

to complete the list.

The categories of personal data sought were; Date and country (or State) of birth; date of death; religious affiliation; standard of education; vocation before entering Parliament; trade union; whether offices

held in trade union; local government career; State Parliamentary career; Federal Parliamentary career.

The collection of this data was harder to come by and check in many cases than we had anticipated when We

started to compile the list. First, some of the data we

wanted had not been deomed to be appropriate for Parlia-mentary officials to accumulate and record Second, the

Electoral Office does not require some of the data (e.g. • date and place of birth) which might seem relevant to their role in public affairs. Third, Fred Johns, who

compiled the successive volumes of "Who's Who" for the first thirty years of the century, seem to have regarded

Labour Members (other than the top men) as of little interest to himself or his contemporaries. Fourth, some

former Labour Members slip from public view after leaving Parliament and are not the subjects of metropolitan Press obituaries upon their deaths. Fifth, a few Members and

• ex- Members are reticent about some details of themselves and their careers. Six, the memories of families and

friends of some of the earlier Members are hazy and imper--feet,

It is not surprising, then, that we have not got as complete data, or as- completely checked details, as we should have liked. What we, have to offer is neither 100% complete nor, perhaps, 100% exact. It is the best

we could compile after months of searching, interviewing and correspondence, incidentally to other work. We are

most grateful to the Members, officials, librarians and others in every State and in the Capital Territory who have helped us. We shall welcome any corrections and • any supplementary information within the categories listed

above regarding the Parliamentary biographies,

We hope this material will save other research workers some of the tiresome hunting we have been involved in. They_ are welcome to use any of it, including the tables; with the usual acknowledgments.

LABOUR MEMBERS

PRL LAMENT

19Q 1 - 195k

Note: Members of the N, S, W, (Lang) t

Labour Party 1931-6 and of the Non-Communist (Lang) Labour Party 1940-1 have been included on the creneral list as these splinter groups of Fed-

eral Members came from and returned to the general Parliamentary Labour

Party. Two former members of the A.L.P. have, however, been listed separately as they were not, during the period of their Commonwealth

Parliamentary membership, members either of the AS L. P. or of the Fed-

eral Parliamentary Labour Party.

The following tables are

supplementary to

those to be found in the appendices of "' he nustralian Federal Labour Party 1901-1951" by L, F. Crisp. The

tables in those appendices referring to ,Federal Parlia-mentarians were confined to those actual ling sitting in one or other Chamber in May 1901 and on January I of 1911 t 1921, ' 931, 19L

.1 and 1951. The tables below refer

to all who have been Labour Federal Parliamentarians at any time and for any period between May 1901 and Septem-ber 1, 195L..

We have - chosen certain periods for these tables upon the following basis: • 1901-10 Parliaments elected during the real

three-party period of Corrmonyrealth history;

1910-7 Parliaments elected during Labour's first period of Federal ascendancy;

1917-29 Parliaments elected during Labour's years in the doldru is following the Conscription split of 1916;

1929-31 The one Parliament when Labour was in office (though without a Senate majority) between the World Wars;

931-i40 Parliaments elected during the years of division following the Lang schism, of 19.31;

1940--9 Parliaments of the second period of Labour's Federal ascendancy;

19L 9- Recent years in Opposition again.
