National Party Federal Conference - September 5-8 1991

A total review of Federal Policy and an extensive Agenda of motions would be considered at the National Party's 1991 Federal Conference, to be held at the Canberra Rex Hotel between September 5 and 8, the Party's Federal President, John Paterson, said today.

Mr Paterson, releasing the Conference Papers, said the Party convened a Federal Conference (as opposed to the Annual Federal Council) once every three years, or once in the life of each Federal Parliament. The last Federal Conference was held in July 1989.

He said a major feature of Conference was that the majority of delegates represented the Branch level of the Party throughout Australia.

"In other words, this really is a Conference of the Party membership, with Branch delegates having a direct and dominating influence on the development of policy. Of 180 registrations for Conference, 113 represent the broad Party membership, including Women's sections and the Young Nationals, 31 are Federal or State Parliamentarians, 15 are Executive delegates and 21

are Party observers or alternate Branch delegates."

He said the Conference was of major importance and would set the basis of the Party's campaign thrust for the next Federal election.

"The Federal Leader, Tim Fischer, will address Conference on Friday afternoon (September 6). Our keynote guest speaker, President of the National Farmers' Federation, Graham Blight, will speak on Saturday afternoon (September 7).

"We are delighted Mr Blight was able to accept our invitation to present a keynote address. His views will be particularly pertinent given the economic crisis facing people and families in country Australia and our vital agricultural industries.

"His presence is particularly fitting, given the theme of Conference - Country First. This clearly indicates the National Party's commitment to policies that are in the best interests of the future progress of Australia's primary industries, as well as people living and working in country and regional Australia."

Mr Paterson said the Conference would be preceded on September 5 by the Annual meetings of the Young National Party, the Women's Federal Council and Federal Council.

"I am especially pleased at the high level of registrations for the Conference. It shows that despite tough economic times there is a keen interest amongst our membership to continue the progress of the Party and the development of its policies," Mr Paterson said.
