Senator GIETZELT (NEW SOUTH WALES) - Is the Minister representing the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs aware of yesterday's statement by Mr Ken Egan, President of the Australian Tyre Distributors Association, that the takeover bid by Dunlop Australia Ltd for Olympic Consolidated Industries Ltd will, if approved, create a monopoly among the country's largest tyre manufacturers? He said that such a monopoly could result in 400 independent tyre dealers being squeezed out of business. Will the Minister undertake to discuss this matter with the Government and take such action as is necessary to avoid this monopoly development and thus save 400 more small businesses from going to the wall?

Senator DURACK -Senator Gietzelt asked whether the Minister was aware of the statement by Mr Egan concerning the takeover offer by Dunlop Australia Ltd. I am not aware of it nor have I knowledge of the state of mind of the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs on this matter. I will refer the question to the Minister and ask him to provide an early answer for Senator Gietzelt.
