Senator CARRICK -Yesterday Senator Wheeldonasked me whether the Government had recognised the new Government in Liberia following the assassination of President William Tolbert who was also the Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity. I am advised that the Government has not yet recognised the new Government in Liberia and that it will wait to see how the situation develops before making a decision. There is no urgent requirement for the Government to make such a decision. In my reply, I also said that the Government was not yet aware of what arrangements would be made for the succession of a new Chairman of the OAU. I am now informed that until a new Chairman is elected at the OAU summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone, later this year the first ViceChairman of the OAU, President Leopold Senghor of Senegal, will act as Chairman.
