Senator MacGIBBON (QUEENSLAND) -Is the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs aware that a proposal last year to close the United States Consulate in Brisbane was rescinded in the light of widespread community protest? Is the Minister aware that this decision has now been reversed and closure of the Consulate is imminent? Again, there is massive community action for the retention of the Consulate. Once more this has my unqualified support. In view of the importance to the Australian-United States alliance of adequate representation being maintained in an area of nearly one-quarter of the Australian continent- an area more important than any other part of Australia, particularly with regard to the export of energy resourceswill the Minister assure the Senate that the Australian Government will use all its resources to influence the United States to keep the Brisbane Consulate open?

Senator DURACK -I will have to refer that question to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and ask him to provide an early answer for Senator MacGibbon.
