Senator YOUNG (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) -I refer the Leader of the Government in the Senate to a motion which was presented to the Senate yesterday and which the Senate duly passed. It involved the erection of certain facilities within the parliamentary triangle. I ask: Why was this matter referred direct to the Parliament and not to the Joint Standing Committee on the New and Permanent Parliament House? It has previously been the practice to give that Committee an opportunity, if it so desired, to inquire into the need or otherwise for any of these recommendations so that it could then refer the matter back to the Parliament with its approval or otherwise.

Senator CARRICK -I am not aware that that was not done. I am aware of the very good work of that Joint Committee and the importance of its being kept informed on and its advice sought for virtually each activity within the parliamentary triangle. I pay tribute to the work of the Committee in the past. If the matter was not referred to the Committee I will seek out .the reason. In any case I will convey the message to the Minister concerned.
