Senator WRIEDT (TASMANIA) asked the Minister for

Supply, upon notice:

(1)   Does the Department undertake the overhaul and/or maintenance of aircraft of other countries? If so, bow many were handled in 1969 and 1970?

(2)   What were the total charges made in each year to each country concerned?


Senator Sir KENNETH ANDERSON - The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1)   Department of Supply does not undertake, in its own establishments, the overhaul or maintenance of aircraft of other countries. Department of Supply has, however, placed contracts on private industry for the repair and overhaul of aircraft components for the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

(2)   The funding arrangements and costs for the repair and overhaul of these aircraft are as follows:

(a)   Foreign Aid to Malaysia

The cost to the Australian Government for the overhaul and maintenance of components for a variety of aircraft was:

1969- 70- $20,131

1970- 71- $59,800 (to December 1970)

(b)   Malaysian Sabre Project

The cost to the Malaysian Government for the overhaul of Sabre aircraft components was: 1970-71- $50,000 (to December 1970)
