Senator GREENWOOD (VICTORIA) (Minister for Health) - I affirm what I have earlier said, and what is the position, that the provision and servicing of hospitals is essentially a matter for the State governments. The Commonwealth's position is one of rendering assistance and the ways in which the Commonwealth Government has assisted are well established and do not require at this stage any reiteration by me. The type of assistance rendered by the Commonwealth Government in assisting the States in the determinations which they have to make is a matter of Commonwealth concern. There have been discussions, but not on a formal basis, and they will continue. The outcome of those discussions must await not only the representations which are made and the consideration to be given by Government but also the final determinations which are made by the State governments in regard to their hospital finances.
