Senator Douglas McClelland (NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister representing the VicePresident of the Executive Council, upon notice:

(1)   Did the Prime Minister inform Senator McClelland by letter on 7th August 1970 that the Australian Council for the Arts is conscious of the need for a high standard of criticism of the arts generally and that the Council is at present considering the possibility of arranging a series of awards for journalists?

(2)   What further consideration, if any, has been given to this proposal and has any decision yet been made.

Senator Sir KENNETHANDERSONThe answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   The Australian Council for the Arts has been in touch with newspaper managements, the Australian Newspapers Council and the Australian Journalists Association and has sought the interest and support of leading journalists with experience in the arts. Firm proposals have not yet been formulated.
