Senator KEEFFE - My question is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Labour and National Service. I preface it by asking him whether he is aware that most young men who obtain deferment of national service call-up in order to complete university and other higher education courses are called up immediately they fail an end of year examination - frequently through no fault of their own - and after 2 years national service a high percentage do not resume their studies. Can the Minister advise whether the Government is prepared to examine a scheme whereby such young students can be given greater latitude in their endeavours to complete their studies, or alternatively, in appropriate cases can call-up be deferred indefinitely?
