Senator Douglas McClelland (NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister representing the VicePresident of the Executive Council, upon notice:

(1)   Which professional theatre organisations have (a) received and (b) are receiving financial assistance from the Australian Council for the Arts, and what is the amount involved in each case.

(2)   What consultation, if any, takes place between the Australian Council for the Arts, the Professional Drama Council and the New South Wales Government's Advisory Committee on Cultural Grants in the allocation of financial assistance.

Senator Sir KENNETHANDERSONThe Vice President of the Executive Council has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

The Australian Council for the Artshas advised that:

(1)   For the purposes of this question, the term professional theatre organisations' has been defined as those continually operating companies employing a considerable proportion of their administrative, technical and artistic personnel on a professional basis.

(a)   and (b) The following professional theatre organisations have received financial assistance from the Australian Council for the Arts:

 

 

The Australian Council for the Arts consults each year with the New South Wales Government's Advisory Committee on Cultural Grants before its major grants are announced for the following year. There is in addition considerable contact of a less formal kind with members of the Committee throughout the year.

The Professional Drama Council provides advice to both the New South Wales Government's Advisory Committee and to the Australian Council for the Arts. A special panel nominated by. the Professional Drama Council has made recommendations to the Australian Council for the Arts for the past 2 years on the grants to the regional professional drama companies in Sydney.
