Senator CAVANAGH asked the Minis ter representing the Minister for the Interior, upon notice:

(1)   Did the tragedy in Canberra during recent heavy rains when lives were lost, result from excessive water flowing over Melrose Drive.

(2)   Was the volume of water flowing over the road greatly increased by the action of the National Capital Development Commission on a plan of the Department of Works to direct all drainage water into a cement channel, which stopped 25 feet from the road causing floodwaters to take an 'S' course to flow through pipes under the road.

(3)   Did the construction of the channel up to the road before the construction of a channel under the road cause or contribute to the volume and current of water flowing over the road and therefore contribute to the deaths by drowning that occurred.
