Senator WILKINSON (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) asked the Minis ter representing the Minister for Labour and National Service, upon notice:

(1)   Under the National Service Act 1951-1968, how many young men, to date -

(a)   have been inducted into the Army and have finished or are finishing their 2 years of national service;

(b)   have been registered by a court as conscientious objectors and granted total deferment;

(c)   have been granted exemption from combat duties;

(d)   have applied for exemption as conscientious objectors and are awaiting court proceedings; and

(e)   have openly not complied with the Act and/or informed the Minister of their intention not to comply with any further requirements of the Act.

(2)   Of those listed in (e) above, how many have been prosecuted by the Department and against how many others have legal proceedings been commenced.
