Senator SCOTT - The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

1.   In my Press statement of 21st April 1969 I indicated that two customs officers at Fremantle had been suspended. These officers have since been charged in the Fremantle Court of Petty Sessions.

As these charges have not been heard, it has not been established that a bribe was offered or accepted.

2.   There have been cases in the past at Fremantle where officers reported to their supervisors that they had been offered small sums of money by passengers (usually southern European migrants) in connection with the clearance of their luggage. On the advice of the Deputy Crown Solicitor, there was not sufficient evidence to lay charges against the persons concerned.
