Senator E B JOHNSTON asked the Minister representing the PostmasterGeneral, upon notice -

1.   Is the Minister in a position to state the decrease in the number of telephones connected to exchanges in (a) the metropolitan areas and (b) the country districts of the various States during the past twelve months?

2.   Will the Government review the present high rentals charged to country subscribers, with a view to reducing same to a minimum, as soon as the initial cost of installation has been recouped to the department?

3.   Would not a reduction of telephone charges to meet the times, particularly in the country districts, mean better business to the department than permitting customers to disconnect their telephone owing to their inability to meet the present charges?
