Senator DALY (through Senator Barnes) - The answers are -

1.   The purposes for which the honorable member for Reid left Australia were to act as Government Delegate at the Internationa) Labour Conference, to represent the Government before the Permanent Mandates Commission, to act as one of the Australian represen tatives at the League of Nations Assembly, and to investigate and report upon the organization of Australia House and its related activities.

2.   Yes.

3.   Senator R.S. Guthrie was sent from Australia at the expense of the Commonwealth to attend the second session of the International Labour Conference held at Geneva in 1920. No member of Parliament has on any occasion before this year attended a meeting of the Mandates Commission.

4.   The Commonwealth Government was represented at the International Labour Conference by an official from Australia in 1923. In 1926 an official was sent from Australia to assist the High Commissioner in connexion with the examination by the Mandates Commission of the reports to the Council of the League of Nations on the administration of the Mandated Territories. Otherwise, it has been the practice for the High Commissioner in London to represent the Commonwealth at meetings of the International Labour Conference and the Permanent Mandates Commission. It is, however, pointed out that both those bodies have expressed particular satisfaction at the attendance before them of members of Parliament or officers connected with the administration of the Mandated Territories.

5.   Yes.

6.   See answer to No. 1. An inquiry into the organization of Australia House was conducted by the honorable member for Reid prior to his attendance at the League of Nations Assembly. 7.I would refer the honorable senator to the statement of the Prime Minister on the 9th July, 1930(Hansard, page 3870), in which he indicated that the honorable member for Reid had been asked to conduct the inquiry in his capacity as chairman of the joint Committee of Public Accounts.

8.   The amount brought to account todate is £840.
