Senator BARNES - The answers are -

1.   It was agreed that a minimum organization should be maintained comprising a peace establishment providing for the training of 35,000 officers, non-commissioned officers and men. That organization is being maintained.

2.   The statement made by the Minister in June last, and reported on page 3099 of Hansard, that, " Over a period of five months we have averaged nearly 2,000 new recruits monthly, and the total required should be reached by the end of October," was justified by the results achieved up to that time, but prevailing conditions have apparently delayed its fulfilment.
