Senator BARNES - The answers are -

1.   Yes.

2.   Fourteen: but of these a number has beengiven an opportunity of applying for transfer to the Public Service under the recent amendment of the Public Service Act.

3.   It is hoped to avoid any general plan of dismissals:but in individual cases where, notwithstanding the rationing scheme now in operation as a result of economical reorganization being effected by the Military Board, no useful employment compatible with the rank or qualifications of an officer can be found for him, there is really no other alternative but to retire such an officer.

4.   Those with twenty years' surviveor more will receive pay in lieu of furlough and in eases in which the service is less than twenty years, special authority has been given for the payment of a proportionate amount according to the length of service. In addition, any officer compulsorily retrenched is eligible for the compensation prescribed under the Superannuation Act. according to the number of units for whichhe has been contributing and his length of service.
